The origins of the yo-yo are debated, but the earliest known references to the toy are from Greece around 500 BCE. However, some believe the yo-yo originated in China even earlier.
Here are some other milestones in the history of the yo-yo:
  • 17th century
The Chinese yo-yo, called kongjung, was first described in text. The slits on the side of the discs make noise when the yo-yo spins.

  • Mid-19th century
The yo-yo became popular in Europe after being introduced from China. Europeans called it the diabolo, which is Latin for "devil on two sticks".

  • 1800s
In England, the yo-yo was called a bandalore and was a favorite toy of the English royal family.

  • 1866
Two Ohio inventors patented a metal yo-yo in the United States, calling it a "bandelore" and a "whirligig".

  • 1920s
The modern yo-yo craze began in the United States. Filipino bellhop Pedro Flores noticed the toy's popularity with hotel guests and began manufacturing it.

  • 1928
Donald Duncan saw Flores entertaining children with the yo-yo and recognized its marketability. Duncan started Duncan Yo-Yo, which produced the first plastic yo-yo.

It is believed that the yo-yo most likely originated in China. The first historical mention of the yo-yo, however, was from Greece in the year 500 B.C. These ancient toys were made out of wood, metal, or painted terra cotta disks and called just that, a disc.
