The oldest continuously inhabited structure is generally considered to be Taos Pueblo in New Mexico, with construction between approximately 1000 and 1450 CE. However, older structures exist, such as the Watson Brake mounds in Louisiana, built around 3500 BCE, and the LSU Campus Mounds, with the first dating to around 11,000 years ago. Other notable ancient sites include the well-preserved cliff dwellings of Mesa Verde and the adobe buildings of Acoma Pueblo, which are also very old and continuously inhabited.
Continuously Inhabited Structures
  • Taos Pueblo (New Mexico):
This adobe community is estimated to have been built between 1000 and 1450 CE and is one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements in the United States, functioning as both an archaeological site and a living community.

Older Structures (Not Necessarily Inhabited Continuously)
  • LSU Campus Mounds (Louisiana):
A study using radiocarbon dating suggests these human-made structures are among the oldest in North America, with the first mound's construction dating back approximately 11,000 years.

Other Ancient Architectural Sites
  • Cliff Dwellings (Colorado):
Sites like the Cliff Palace in Mesa Verde National Park contain well-preserved structures built by the Ancestral Puebloans, showcasing common Pueblo architectural forms.
  • Ocmulgee Earth Lodge (Georgia):
This ancient earth-bermed structure is part of the Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park.
