Mountain Lion in Corral De Tierra, California killing pets and lifestock and doesn't appear to be eating them but killing for sport

3 Depredation permits have been issued for this Mountain lion killing pets, and lifestock before it kills a child or smaller human being. I'm not sure if they are trying to tranquilize this mountain lion or killing it at this point because of the amount of daily killing it is doing of pets and livestock.

begin quote:

In California, a depredation permit allows landowners/tenants to lethally control wildlife (like bears, wild pigs, mountain lions, bobcats, beavers, turkeys, squirrels, crows) causing property damage, but requires demonstrating non-lethal methods failed first, except for immediate threats like a bobcat attacking livestock. You apply through the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW), detailing the damage and proposed actions, with permits covering short-term relief, requiring tagging and reporting, and not overriding local firearm laws.
Key Agencies & Species
  • U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS): Manages federal permits for migratory birds (crows, etc.).

    When You Need One (Examples)
    • Mammals: Elk, bear, bobcat, beaver, wild pig, wild turkey, gray squirrels, mountain lions (in most areas) damaging property or livestock.

  • Birds: Migratory birds (like crows) damaging crops or property.

    How to Apply (General Steps)
    1. Attempt Non-Lethal Control: Implement hazing, habitat modification, or other deterrents first.

  • Document Damage: Keep records of the damage and threats.

  • Contact CDFW/USFWS: Apply for a permit, providing details on the damage, species, location, and non-lethal efforts.

  • Await Approval: The agency assesses your situation to determine if a permit is warranted.

  • Follow Permit Conditions: If issued, you must use the specified methods, tag animals (mammals), report kills, and adhere to all terms.

    Important Considerations
    • Short-Term Relief: Permits are for temporary fixes, not permanent solutions.

  • Tagging & Reporting: All animals taken must be tagged and reported to the CDFW.

  • Firearm Laws: A permit doesn't override local, state, or federal firearm regulations.

  • Mountain Lions: Special rules apply; in some areas (like Santa Ana/Monica Mountains), lethal removal isn't the first option.
