I found out they no longer make the KLR 650s to run on Diesel for the marine core

 begin quotes:

No, they no longer produce diesel KLR 650s for the U.S. Marine Corps. Production of the famous multi-fuel military motorcycle—officially designated as the HDT M1030M1—ceased many years ago.
The History of the Diesel KLR
The diesel variants were never actually built by Kawasaki. A third-party military contractor named Hayes Diversified Technologies (HDT) bought standard gasoline Kawasaki KLR 650s and retrofitted them with a proprietary, liquid-cooled 584cc (and later 670cc) diesel engine.
The Department of Defense requested this modification to satisfy the military's "Single Fuel Concept." This strategy mandated that all field equipment run on heavy fuels like Diesel or JP-8 jet fuel to simplify combat zone logistics.
Why Production Stopped
  • Limited Production Run: Only a few hundred (some records state exactly 214) of the M1030M1 units were ever manufactured before the military contract concluded.
  • Company Dissolution: Hayes Diversified Technologies has long since ceased operations, and its founder, Fred Hayes, passed away in 2021. Because of this, authentic replacement parts are nearly non-existent.
  • Shift to Electric: In modern scout operations, the Marines have transitioned toward specialized stealth platforms, including nearly silent electric dirt bikes like the Zero MMX.
Buying One Today
The remaining military stock has been decommissioned. While they occasionally surface on government surplus platforms or collector websites like Mecum Auctions, their rarity has driven prices up. Once sold at surplus for around $5,000, they now command anywhere from $10,000 to over $25,000 depending on their running condition.
If you are looking for a standard adventure bike, the civilian, gasoline-powered Kawasaki KLR650 remains in active production.
Are you researching these for a military history project, or are you actively looking to track one down at a surplus auction?
