The U.S. military relies on electric dirt bikes like the Zero MMX for silent, zero-emissions reconnaissance and rapid infiltration. Built by Zero Motorcycles, these tactical bikes feature hot-swappable batteries and lack a heat or audio signature.
The Zero MMX and Military Use
The MMX was explicitly designed for Special Operations and Reconnaissance Marines to move through rugged or densely vegetated environments where standard tactical vehicles cannot maneuver.
  • Tactical Advantage: Because it runs on battery, it produces almost no sound, making it the ultimate stealth vehicle for missions.
  • Performance: The MMX can reach speeds over 85 mph and has an off-road range of over 50 miles, or up to 100 miles depending on how troops configure its twin swappable 3.6-kw batteries.
  • Field Charging: During exercises with Recon Marines, units recharge the bikes in the field using light-armored vehicles or portable solar panel arrays.
Similar Electric Platforms
While the Zero MMX is purpose-built for the military, the commercial market offers a few options that share similar stealth capabilities and off-road ruggedness:
  • Stark Varg: A high-performance, full-sized electric motocross bike known for its incredible power and natural "dirt bike" feel.
  • Artic Leopard EX800: A mid-speed, heavy-duty trail bike with a substantial battery and highly adjustable power modes.
  • Volcan Grunt: An extreme-terrain bike favored by hunters for its fat tires and submersible motor, making it capable of "floating" over mud, sand, and snow in near-silence.
Military Electric Bike Context
The Pentagon has been pursuing hybrid and electric stealth bikes for over a decade, starting with prototypes like the DARPA-backed SilentHawk (which combined Alta Motors technology with a hybrid generator system) to achieve maximum mission endurance. Today, the Marine Corps actively field-tests and deploys units like the MMX in places like the Pacific theater.
For a good comparison between Zero's civilian/tactical offerings and other high-performance electric dirt bikes:

In addition to being stealthy, being more fuel agnostic, and fantastic torque, Electric bikes can work in marine environments as well without needing a snorkel.  More
