What years did the Great White Steamship go to Catalina Island from Southern California

 begin quotes:

The SS Catalina, famously known as the Great White Steamship, traveled to Avalon on Santa Catalina Island from 1924 to 1975.
Key Service Timeline
  • Maiden Voyage: Took its first trip across the San Pedro Channel on June 30, 1924.
  • World War II Hiatus: Service was paused between August 1942 and April 1946 while the ship served as a U.S. Army troop ferry in San Francisco.
  • Final Years: The vessel sat out the 1971 and 1972 seasons due to labor disputes, but briefly resumed voyages until making its final crossing on September 14, 1975.
(Note: While the S.S. Catalina is the most famous, an earlier "Great White Steamer" called the S.S. Avalon made the same passenger runs from 1920 until the early 1950s).
