did the first bicycle have brakes? No.

 begin quotes:
Bicycles Have Evolved. Have We? | The New Yorker
The first bicycle, called the dandy horse or Draisienne (invented in 1817), had steering, but no brakes. To steer, the rider turned the front wheel using handlebars. To stop, the rider simply dragged their feet on the ground.
The original 1817 machine was a simple wooden frame with two wheels. It had no pedals; you pushed it forward with your feet like a scooter. Brakes and pedals were added much later as the bike evolved.
  • 1860s: Pedals were attached directly to the front wheel. Simple "spoon" brakes, which pressed a piece of rubber or metal against the front tire, were also invented around this time.
  • 1880s: The modern "safety bicycle" (with pedals connected to the back wheel by a chain) became the standard design.

Did the first bike have brakes?
In the early 1800s, the first bicycles were simple machines that lacked any sort of braking system. Riders would have to use their feet to drag along the ground to slow down or stop. The first rudimentary braking system was developed in the late 1800s, with the introduction of spoon brakes.
