Goldenbush and yarrow are now in Bloom along the tops of Northern California Cliffs next to the ocean a lot

The Goldenbush and Yarrow are in bloom now all over the Northern California coast where we live especially on top of the small to large cliffs along coastal trails everywhere right now over looking the ocean.
June 2022 Plant of the Month: Golden Yarrow – Public Works
Goldenbush and yarrow are tough, drought-tolerant plants that thrive in California landscapes. They are excellent choices for adding bright yellow color to your garden while saving water.
Golden Yarrow (Eriophyllum confertiflorum)
Despite the name, this is actually a small native sub-shrub, not a true yarrow.
  • Appearance: Features lacy, silver-gray foliage and clusters of bright golden-yellow daisy-like flowers.
  • Size: Grows in compact, mounded clumps about 1 to 2 feet tall and wide.
  • Care: Thrives in full sun and very well-draining soil. It needs almost no water once established.
  • Wildlife: It is a magnet for butterflies and other local pollinators.
  • Resources: Learn more about where this plant grows at the Calscape Golden Yarrow guide.
Common Yarrow (Achillea millefolium)
This is a hardy perennial famous for its feathery, fern-like leaves.
  • Appearance: Features flat, table-like clusters of small flowers. While traditionally white, bright yellow garden varieties like Moonshine are very popular.
  • Size: Usually grows 1 to 3 feet tall.
  • Care: Requires full sun and handles poor, dry soil very well.
  • Uses: It has a long history in traditional herbal medicine for treating cuts and fevers.
  • Wildlife: The flat flower heads provide perfect landing pads for bees and butterflies.
  • Resources: Read about how these plants benefit the garden in the UC Agriculture and Natural Resources article.
Comparison
  • True identity: Golden yarrow is a true California native shrub. Common yarrow is a hardy perennial found worldwide with both native and European origins.
  • Foliage: Golden yarrow has small, woolly, deeply-lobed leaves. Common yarrow has long, soft, fern-like leaves that are fragrant when crushed.
Could you tell me if you are looking to plant these in the ground or in pots, and how many hours of sunlight your space gets? I can help you pick the exact right variety.

What not to plant next to yarrow?
AI Overview
How to Grow and Use Yarrow -
Avoid planting yarrow near moisture-loving shade plants (like hostas or impatiens), creeping vines (like cucumbers), or aggressive herbs (like mint and fennel). Yarrow thrives in full sun and dry, poor soil. Moisture-loving neighbors can cause it to rot, while aggressive spreaders will compete for space.
Specific plants to avoid placing next to yarrow include:
  • Shade and Moisture-Lovers: Plants like hostas, coral bells (heuchera), and astilbe require deep shade and moist, rich soil, which will cause yarrow roots to rot and stunt its growth.
  • Creeping Vines:
Cucumbers and similar sprawling vines can quickly climb over low-growing yarrow, blocking its essential sunlight.

  • Mint and Fennel: True mints and fennel have completely different growth habits and needs, and some gardeners have noted that they release compounds that actively interfere with yarrow's development.
