NOrthern california coastal squirrels that live in the goldenbush and yarrow plants

begin quotes:
California Ground Squirrel | Otospermophilus beecheyi ...
You are likely thinking of the California ground squirrel (Otospermophilus beecheyi). This is the most common squirrel in the coastal sage scrub habitats of Northern California.
Why these squirrels love these plants:
  • Shelter and Safety: These squirrels do not live in trees. Instead, they dig deep underground tunnel systems. Shrubs like Coastal Goldenbush and Golden Yarrow give them places to hide from hawks and foxes while they are foraging.
  • A Buffet of Food: These squirrels are omnivores. They eat the seeds, flowers, leaves, and roots of both the goldenbush and the yarrow.
How to spot them:
  • Look for colors: They have mixed gray, brown, and white fur with a white ring around their eyes.
  • Listen for alarms: When they spot danger, they stand up tall on their hind legs and let out a high-pitched whistle to warn their neighbors.

People also ask
Do squirrels eat yarrow?
AI Overview
Squirrels typically do not eat yarrow (Achillea millefolium). Because yarrow is highly aromatic and contains bitter compounds, it acts as a natural deterrent, making it an excellent choice for a squirrel-resistant garden.
However, squirrels are opportunistic foragers. If you notice your yarrow being chewed, it may be the work of other local wildlife like rabbits, ground squirrels, or voles.
