If you were wondering where Mono County is it is in California and likely named after Mono lake and is on the Nevada side of Yosemite National park

As a child I swam in Mono Lake (I'm not sure of people still do this because of how salty the water is there anymore). But this was the 1950s where anything goes more than now in how people did things in California. We still were only 50 or so years away from 1900 and the cowboy days of California because now we are 70 or more years away from the 1950s now.

What I remember being there is how the crystalline objects under the water hurt your feet and how you could float if you avoided all these pointed things underwater about halfway out of the water then in the 1950s. Would I do this now? No. For about 100 different reasons. However, to each his own.

How salty is MOno Lake?

begin quotes:

Mono Lake has an average salinity of about 81 grams per liter (g/L), making it roughly 2.5 to 3 times saltier than the ocean. You can learn more about these measurements through the Mono Lake Committee.
Salinity and Water Chemistry Details
  • Salt Levels: The lake holds about 280 million tons of dissolved salts. Salinity changes based on water volume, dropping when snowmelt flows in and rising during dry periods or droughts
    .
  • Alkalinity: The water has a high pH of around 9.8 to 10, giving it a soapy, slippery feel.
  • Minerals: Instead of just regular table salt, the water contains high amounts of chlorides, carbonates, and sulfates.
  • Wildlife Impact: No fish can live in the harsh, alkaline water, but trillions of specialized brine shrimp and alkali flies thrive here to feed millions of migratory birds.
