Does ATP run neurons too?

begin quotes:

Yes, ATP (adenosine triphosphate) is the primary energy currency that powers neurons, just like it does for every other cell in the body. Neurons need a constant, massive supply of ATP to fire electrical signals and run the cellular pumps that maintain their chemical balance.
Beyond acting as internal fuel, ATP also plays an active role in how neurons communicate and function:
How ATP Powers Neurons
  • Ion Pumps: ATP runs the sodium-potassium pumps that reset a neuron's electrical charge after it fires an impulse.
  • On-Demand Energy: Mitochondria inside synapses produce ATP precisely when nerve activity spikes and communication happens.
  • Signaling Molecule: Neurons and support cells release extracellular ATP as a Wikipedia cotransmitter or warning signal to talk to neighboring cells and manage inflammation.
If you'd like, I can explain how astrocytes feed emergency fuel to neurons or how brain cells recycle ATP when activity gets intense.

by E Shigetomi · 2024 · Cited by 56 — ATP is a major gliotransmitter released by astrocytes, and therefore, it is thought that ATP is primarily released from astrocytes, not neurons.
