I think it's pretty obvious that Star Trek led to Star Wars too.

However,  though Star Trek is the most successful TV SCi FI franchise it is important to understand that STAR WARS is the most successful Movie SCI FI Franchise which is interesting too (at least to me and possibly you too!)

begin quote from AI Overview
The Star Wars franchise is estimated to be worth between $46.7 billion and $65 billion in total value. Historically, the franchise has generated roughly $46.7 billion in lifetime gross revenue across all media platforms, securing its spot as one of the highest-grossing media franchises in history.
Because intellectual property (IP) value takes future earnings and brand strength into account, modern financial analysts value the brand as a standalone asset closer to the $65 billion mark.
Revenue Breakdown
“The largest portion comes from merchandise sales at $29 billion (£21.9bn), followed by $10.3 billion (£7.8bn) at the box office...” -- Yahoo Finance UK
The financial footprint of the galaxy far, far away breaks down into these distinct streams:
  • Merchandise & Retail: $29.05 billion. Toys, clothing, collectibles, and licensing deals make up the absolute majority of the franchise's wealth.
  • Box Office: $10.34 billion. This includes the original trilogy, prequels, Disney-era sequel trilogies, spin-offs, and the 2026 theatrical release The Mandalorian & Grogu.
  • Video Games: $4.01 billion. Driven by massively successful EA titles, Lego adaptations, and mobile games.
  • Books & Comic Sales: $1.82 billion. From the expansive Expanded Universe (Legends) to canonical print media.
  • Home Video: $1.27 billion. Physical DVD, Blu-Ray, and digital VOD purchases of the core films.
  • TV & Streaming Revenue: $280 million+. Broadcast syndication and the massive streaming footprint driving subscriptions for Disney+.
The Disney Acquisition Return on Investment (ROI)
The Walt Disney Company famously purchased Lucasfilm from George Lucas in 2012 for $4.05 billion. According to corporate disclosures, Disney generated nearly $12 billion in value from the franchise, meaning they tripled their initial multi-billion dollar investment in just over a decade.
Would you like to look closer at the box office profits and losses of the specific Disney-era films, or are you interested in how Star Wars compares to other massive franchises like Marvel or Harry Potter?
