They did this to capture the attention of younger viewers and make them Star Wars fans for life. It actually makes complete sense just like Jar Jar Binks was used to capture the younger audiences. Because the people who actually go to theaters are from 4 years old to 30 years old and not above. For example, I saw the first Star wars movie with my son when he was 3 years old in Sunland up against the Angeles Forest area in Los Angeles County. He is still a Star Wars fan even though he is now 52 years old. In order to keep people going to the theaters to watch Star wars movies they have to capture the attention and love of newer generations of kids to keep all this going on into infinity sort of like Star Trek too.
So, the way this movie was made was for a relatively young audience. I found it strange in some ways the way it was done but it sort of reminded me of "The Dark Crystal(1982) which was a Jim Henson puppet kind of a story but it is a classic just like The Mandalorian and Grogu(2026) will become a classic if it isn't already around the world.
