of course all this takes practice to make more perfect. However,:
For example, I can tell the story of when my father couldn't work for 6 weeks because he fell off a ladder 30 feet to the floor when I was 5 years old and broke his wrist so he couldn't work till it healed up enough. So, Dad was there with us 7 days a week and he and Mom Began reading to me "Unveiled Mysteries". I was 5 at the time and it was before Television entered our House in 1954 in Tujunga. At the time of his broken wrist I was just 5 years old and in kindergarten in El Cajon which means in Spanish "the Drawer" which I just looked up on Google Translate.
So, my father who was a great storyteller like my grandfather and now me told us how he had fallen while working up 30 feet on an extension ladder. It's possible he couldn't tie off the top of the ladder to anything and then got shocked because often on jobs then and now you have to work hot because businesses or home owners often need those circuits on. But if you are 30 feet up and get shocked often it is going to knock you right off that ladder whether the top is tied off or not.
So, telling a story often begins with you telling stories to your children. However, some of the same skills you also use to tell true stories about your life or the lives of those around you from your perspective.
However, it's important to always realize that often other people have a completely different perspective than you do regarding all this.
Understanding this can also help in your writing too.
NOTE: Regarding safety on ladders in general.
Outside of tying off an extension ladder always if you can to save your life, there is a way where you crook your arm through the ladders rungs so you can work easier without falling off the ladder. But, this only works if either the extension ladder is tied off at the top to something with a rope or you are on a regular standing ladder with 4 legs and you don't lean to far and turn the ladder over.
But, staying on any ladder while working and staying alive is always a trick and reminds me a lot of skiing and roller skating and skateboarding and Surfing.
In other words unless you are really coordinated you shouldn't try any of these things in the first place if you want to stay alive and well.
