The U.S. is different than most of the world because it has become a "Me" nation. Only a nation formed like ours could afford this luxury. Most nations cannot afford this kind of way of life simply because they came about completely differently. So, unless they started with settlers moving out the local inhabitants they couldn't eventually come to a "me" nation like we have.
So, I guess this is both a good thing as well as a bad thing depending upon your perspective.
Then you have the "We" nations like Russia and China that really don't understand us here unless they visit here for a time (more than 2 weeks) to begin to understand what Americans are all about.
What I find strange is that although we are a "Me" nation we tend to do more to help all other nations than "We" nations do.
The question "We" nations ask is: "How can we survive?"
In order for a "me" nation like the U.S. to realistically get to this place we needed Pearl Harbor to get us there the last time. So, ever since our military in the Korean War and the Viet Nam War and Desert Storm and then in the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars were sort of an echo of what we learned at Pearl Harbor.
But, outside of keeping South Korea free from communism we have sort of failed in all the other wars. Look at Iraq which is de facto Iranian at this point. And look carefully at Afghanistan which could easily be Taliban ruled in the next 5 to 10 years as well.
So, something has been lost from the time of Pearl Harbor and World War II hasn't it?
What has been lost is definition. However, most of this definition has been removed by the threat of nuclear war.
So, instead of formal wars we now only are involved in "police Actions" and never really wars. We act like the world's Policeman (and at times we really act like we have no idea what the actual culture is there). So, for example Rumsfeld's statement that he thought trying to make Iraq into a democracy couldn't work is true. It was completely unrealistic to make Sunni ruled Iraq a Shia Ruled democracy because logically all that was going to happen is the Shias would take revenge on the Sunnis for the previous 30 or more years of discrimination which is exactly what has happened.
So, it went from being a Sunni dictarship to a Shia dictatorship masquerading as a democracy, but only being a democracy to Shia Muslims and no one else sort of like Iran.
So, the real reason I'm bringing up the "Me" nations and the "We" nations is that Russia and China are both "We" nations.
The problem with most "We" nations is that they become intrinsically corrupt while the "Me" nations somehow don't have as much of this corruption issue because less time is spent lying to the masses.
So, even though dictators manipulate the "We" nations and tend to control them, they do so by saying things like "What are we going to do to survive our lives now?" and then they direct their frustration at "Me" nations like the U.S. and Europe that they are jealous of.
And this better explains what is actually going on today in the world in a very simplistic way.
We nations and Me nations don't understand each other at all because they are two completely different ways of viewing reality.
So, when Americans look at Russia and think "Well. They look like us. They must also think like us!"
Well. The answer to this is: "NO. They don't think like us at all. They just think we are crazy and we might think the same of them because we don't understand where they are coming from culturally.
