Porcupine quills just like Skunks can be fatal to dogs

The skunks are easy in that if you don't wash the skunk spray out of the dogs eyes within a few minutes your dog will go blind from the spray in their eyes.

I have had to help save two dogs lives from porcupine quills. The first my friend showed me how to do this. We were visiting his land near Mt. Shasta and his dog came back whining with quills inside her mouth and into her face but luckily none went into her eyes. I would say at least 25 to 50 quills total.

We hog tied her and she was a very good and loyal dog. But, you might need to sedate some dogs so they don't bite you or hurt you when you remove the quills. After we hog tied her so she couldn't move or escape we put a large stick in her mouth so she wouldn't drive the quills up into her brain. Then with two of us holding her (she was a black Labrador) we both held her while the owner got a pair of pliers and pulled the quills out one by one.

There was some blood but not much because the quills are like razors in some ways or rapiers so you are pulling them out against the barbs so it is very painful for the dog to endure and she howled at each one we pulled out. But, it was the only way to save her life from quills eventually going up into her brain and killing her. Eventually, we had pulled all that we could reach that hadn't broken off inside and she lived many years more begin okay.

Eventually, years later I had to do the same thing to my wife's dog which was an Australian wire haired Sheep dog. (actually looking at pictures she was a wire haired pointer griffon dog). I had my wife then with our kids hog tie her and hold her with a large piece of wood so she wouldn't bite down and drive the quills up into her brain while I pulled out all the quills with a pair of pliers. You have to be quite strong to do all this by the way properly. So, if you don't think you can do this get someone strong to help you or go to a vet and likely you might pay 1000 or 2000 dollars to get this done if you want your dog to live. If you do nothing your dog likely will die a terrible death.

These are what they look like:
