Why is this?
They couldn't read. Somewhere between 60% to 80% of the people I met in India and Nepal couldn't read or write and were born at home (no health insurance) and everyone in their families had been born at home since before Christ ongoing.
So the 4 or 5 months my family was there everyone begged to come work for us in the U.S. as au Pairs or house boys or house girls to take care of us or any way to get to the U.S. at all.
And even if we had wanted to bring them here to work for us it wasn't legally possible without breaking laws there and making stuff up and we didn't want to make ourselves legally vulnerable in a foreign country. This wasn't a good idea for our family. So, thousands of times we had to either walk away or say "no" to literally thousands of people who asked us this over around a 5 month period in India and Nepal.
It might not be like this now. I don't know for sure but this is the way it was in 1985 and 1986 when I was there with my family traveling through Thailand, India and Nepal and flying through Narito Airport in Japan. I wanted to see Japan then too but it was 20 to 40 times more expensive than Thailand and Nepal and at least 10 to 20 times more expensive than India regarding the exchange rate for the dollar in these countries then. Thailand (at that time) was the most reasonable country to travel in money wise.
Here are exchange rates in relation to the Indian Rupee for several currencies.
