I will illustrate the problem of fundamentalism in all these points of view:
Scientific Fundamentalism
Atheistic fundamentalism
Christian Fundamentalism
Islamic Fundamentalism
Hindu Fundamentalism
Buddhist Fundamentalism
Literally, all these things when taken to Fundamentalism will extinct all life on earth.
Whenever you have "My way or the highway" there are nukes that will kill everyone.
Am I against all religion?
No. Religions tend to be the basis of culture around the world.
However, often they have absolutely nothing to do with what is the truth.
When my best friend Anton was studying for his Bachelor's degree in History and then Master's degree in History specializing in Buddhism and Sanskrit, mostly his degrees were in comparative religion.
We both concluded as we climbed mountains that all religions were obsolete as we made a thorough study of this subject.
This is not to say that individual religions are inherently bad. It is to say that mostly religions are old wives tales told by old men and women to keep the faithful from freaking out and jumping off a cliff in despair in droves.
So, though they are well meaning most of them are in some ways meaningless as you compare them to each other.
We also found that Buddhism through the Dalai Lama is open to understanding Science and combining it with compassion. My friend Anton and I were very attracted to compassion tied to science and the scientific method. In 1976 when he decided not to get a PHd and instead to only get a Master's degree because he didn't want to have to study until he was 30 to do this.
So, he settled for a Master's degree from UCLA in History of Religion while studying with Bola and Joseph Campbell and other religious and anthropological greats of that era from 1969 until 1976. He then, took the rest of his college monies and bought 2 1/2 acres and proceeded to build his own home like my father did. He lived camped on his land as he built it. One of the songs he wrote and sang then said something like "I'm 24 and I'm getting old" which basically meant that "I'm freezing to death trying to save money with no windows yet on my first 12 by 16 foot cabin then the first winter of 1976. So, by not borrowing money for anything and only paying as he earned income his property by 2000 he had been offered around 1 million dollars for. He refused the offer and continued to build houses, cabins and two music studios on his land. He now has the most state of the art Music recording studio and label for 100 miles in all directions. Even though he points out that this could change back and forth any day now with someone purchasing a special type of apple computer that costs anywhere from $5000 to $10,000 dollars. Since he has never borrowed a dime since 1976 and never been bogged down ever by interest rates or mortgages. He is rich (in that he travels around the world doing music tours across the U.S. and to Japan, Europe, and Nepal and India and sometimes to Mexico periodically. He has also been to Nepal and India and Tibet and China many times studying the cultures and religions there since 1985 when he first flew over from Switzerland where he was playing concerts and met my wife and kids and I in Katmandu, Nepal. So, even though I could only go there for one time (1985 and 1986) for 4 months in Japan, Thailand, India and Nepal then. He has studied Tabla (an Indian and Nepali drum) and mastered it through Nepali Tabla Masters, some of whom have either visited or stayed here in the U.S. over the years. He also sponsored the best wooden flautist from Nepal to come to the U.S. who now owns one or more homes in Santa Cruz and other places and who tours with Deva Premal.
Anton's record label is called "Shastasong" if you want to catch him playing right now on tour from Sacramento on into Arizona, Las Vegas and possibly some gigs in Northern Mexico as well. during the next 6 weeks time.
He and I and his girlfriend traveled in January to the Kona side of Hawaii to snorkel for 10 days together and for him to play many concerts in Hilo, Hawaii on the other side of the Island. I hadn't been to Kona side since I lived in Hilo with my first wife and baby in 1974. So, returning to Hilo made me cry because my son is now 40 years old with his own wife and baby and a successful teacher. So, my life has been a success with my son so I'm very happy about this.
The water at places like Beach 69 was 78 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit. So, while it was snowing sort of like an early ice age in much of the U.S. we were snorkeling in 80 degree Fahrenheit water there at that time. However, also I realized I might be pre-diabetic because when I drank papaya and mango juice I became lightheaded and could no longer think straight. I was very confused and scared at the time from this.
Dr. Fox who did my surgery in Mt. Shasta said I have to go on a "No sugars diet" which also means no fruit juice ever (because of Fructose). So, because of this I likely will not become diabetic.
2 to 3 years ago now I gave up all gluten from my diet after being tested allergic to it. Not so much I would die necessarily but enough that eating pizza or pasta that had gluten in it would be like drinking a 6 pack of beer by making my brain swell up so I couldn't think straight.
Also, giving up all gluten often takes all pains from joints and muscles for people over 40 or 50.
One reason I'm snorkeling and swimming in Hawaii is I feel like a 20 year old when I don't eat gluten. I have less physical pain now in my life that I did in my 20s.
Now I'm embarking on a no sugars diet to prevent diabetes. Very Good!

Deva Premal tour schedule:
From anton's Shastasong page after he sponsored Manose to immigrate to U.S. to play concerts around the world:
Manose 2000 in Mount Shasta ManoseBorn to a family of traders and shopkeepers, Nepali native Manose found himself drawn to the bamboo flute as a young boy. His fascination with the rich sound of this instrument quickly developed into true devotion; by the age of seventeen he was already deep into the demanding study of classical South Asian music and had begun to take on students of his own. He is considered one of the most noteworthy new faces on the world music scene, and his talent as a solo performer, as well as his versatility in a variety of genres, has carried him through Asia, Europe, and the United States.Manose is widely recognized as the Nepal's premiere flautist, is the recipient of national awards including instrumentalist of the year, and appears regularly on Nepali T.V. and radio. He has been a music teacher for the University of Wisconsin's College Year in Nepal program, and Naropa Institute's Nepal program since 1995. He has also tought at the Lark in the Morning music camp in Mendocino for many years.
