One could also say that politeness is the basis of civilization too. I remember being a child and capable of reading minds and wondering why people never said what they actually thought. I was very disturbed about this at the time. But, over time I realized that everyone would kill each other (or never speak to each other ever again) if people actually said what they thought about each other all the time.
So, yes, kindness and politeness is the basis of civilization. Without these two things we all would be dead by now.
