When 9-11 took place and Bush intuited that terrorists must suffer in extreme ways to prevent future 9-11's his intentions were good and most Americans and the world supported him in this. However, when we went into Iraq people felt this might be a mistake. Drawing a line in the sand and making terrorists so miserable was a worthwhile goal. However, the unintended consequences have so far been the bankruptcy of most of the free world. Whether the free world can dig itself out of of this latest mess or not remains to be seen.
However, it is the first real sacrifice that the free world has had to pay for the war on terrorism. Finally, the free world feels the real pain of war, bankruptcy. Though this is awful and many wonder if we can recover still it is a very real reality check that cannot be denied. Hopefully now we will open our eyes and see things as they are rather than how we would like them to be. If you can't see things as they really are how can you ever hope to get them to where you want them to be?
