The definition of Sustainability from wikipedia is:
Sustainability is the capacity to endure. In ecology, the word describes how biological systems remain diverse and productive over time. Long-lived and healthy wetlands and forests are examples of sustainable biological systems. For humans, sustainability is the potential for long-term maintenance of well being, which has environmental, economic, and social dimensions. end quote from wikipedia under the heading "Sustainability".
So, as humans we can individually sustain ourselves (keep ourselves alive by whatever means is at our disposal) as families(by whatever means we find available) or as a species (by whatever means our species finds available).
However, if we individually, as families, as groups and as a species don't consider the ramifications of all our actions upon the sustainability of the complete ecosystem earth it will be soon gone. (sooner than we would like which is never).
So, we all have to "Work smarter not necessarily harder" by thinking before we do things that will harm our environments worldwide. Otherwise, we and our grandchildren and their children's children's children will have horrid lives or none at all and will blame their ancestors(Us) for it.
The problem with the world situation now is that we may be on the brink of a trade war which led ultimately (when this last happened) to World War II right after the Great Depression. Since we probably have a 50-50 chance of avoiding a worldwide Great Depression at this point, learning to grow organic food wherever you live might save your life directly or indirectly even if it is just inside the sunniest window of your home worldwide. The easiest things to grow organically (I have found) indoors or outdoors are things like tomatoes and carrots because they can easily grow in small pots anywhere there is enough sun and warmth indoors and outdoors(tomatoes generally are easier indoors). And Carrots might like it more outdoors in a cold frame on a porch or deck. Another easy thing to grow are various kinds of sprouts like alfalpha sprouts or mung bean sprouts or even wheat grass for juicing could be all grown indoors or out. If you have a sprouting Ball jar with a screen lid it is much easier if you are growing sprouts like alfalpha or mung or other kinds of sprouts indoors as it is much less messy generally.
So, learning sustainability generally starts in people by trying to grow their own organic food. At this point it moves beyond theory to actuality. And at that point you begin to see the reality as apposed to whatever theories you have. Reality is always better than theory for learning anything fully even though theory at least introduces someone to the initial concept so they then have a chance of learning the reality of any given thing regarding sustainability worldwide.
Last night there were two programs on TV on NBC one on "Dateline" and the other called simply "Harmony" that addressed "Working smarter by working towards long term sustainability for the whole world. The first program follows Prince Charles of Englands 30 years of research and work into sustainability worldwide. "Harmony" has Prince Charles and many of his friends worldwide who also advocate and live sustainability in their various countries and how the do it. From this one can start or add to their own roadmap to individual, family, and international sustainability so that our children and all our descendents can live good and healthy lives ongoing. By creating a sustainable ecosystem worldwide by maintaining what we have we create the possibility for an actual future for our descendents. If we don't learn about and live sustainability we won't have any descendents for we or our children will be the last.
