If you have watched the "The Daily Show" with Jon Stewart you likely have watched his antics regarding his view on this. He thinks this is ridiculous but others are worried about the high fructose corn syrup in sugary drinks making people obese and killing them to the point where statistically they expect 5,800 New Yorkers to die this year because of being obese or overweight. And one of the things that is leading to this is all processed foods that have high fructose Corn syrup added to them as a cheap but addictive sweetener. So, if you are trying to stay alive please look at the ingredients label of what you are buying. And to add to the misery likely the corn used is genetically engineered and is recognized as a pesticide because of the genetic manipulation of the corn kernels by companies like Monsanto.

Whether they think the mayor is combating obesity or infringing on their
rights, New Yorkers are scheduled to get their say on a proposed ban on
large sugary drinks served at restaurants, movie theaters and other
eateries.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Monday that "sugary drink
consumption is a key driver of the obesity epidemic," and an estimated
5,800 New Yorkers will die this year because they're obese or
