world War III looking a little less fanciful

The apparent use of chemical weapons in the suburbs of Damascus, killing hundreds of civilians, has clearly lifted the Syrian conflict to a yet higher level of crisis.
With the US stiffening its military posture in the eastern Mediterranean and the Russians continuing to defend their only staunch Arab ally, the dire predictions made months ago by some regional analysts that the situation could spiral rapidly into World War III are starting to look a little less fanciful.
Conversely, and for that very reason, there are those who believe that the level of tension that has now been reached may force the unblocking of the process to find a political settlement of the crisis.

I agree with the assessment that a political settlement of the crisis may just have been forced by the illicit use of chemical weapons on so many at once. We all remember how Saddam Hussein's gassing of a whole village of Kurds eventually led to Saddam's death over time.

Likewise, to avoid a nuclear confrontation or more atrocities some kind of political agreement which likely would include two Syrias, like a North and South Syria with separate governments or an East West Syria with Separate governments. One Syria would be Sunni Ruled and the other would Be Shia ruled likely in order to satisfy enough people to actually make the thing work. Also, Russia would have to be allowed to keep it's port and to protect the 50,000 Russians that live there and are often intermarried into Syrian Culture. Also, likely Assad wouldn't be a part of either of these governments because he likely would be tried for War Crimes like Milosovic from Kosovo.
