I know there are special pumps that can pump salt water without damaging the pumps. Ocean water can corrode pipes and pumps so likely they would have to be specially designed for this because most pumps are only good for salt free water pumping.
But, just like helicopters suck up pond water from local ponds for fighting fires, they also might be able to suck up ocean water just as easily to fight fires in the drought, especially when all water in California is at such a premium. By October, if fires are still going like this across the state at least the coastal fires could be partially fought with seawater if the right pumps are used.
However, the other problem with that is salt water might kill local vegetation. But, if the vegetation is being burnt up anyway it might save homes especially where little or no fresh water is available.
