The first thing he wants is for Assad to stay in power. He might want to get rid of ISIS too, but so far he isn't indicating that by who he is actually attacking there. Instead he is attacking rebels and women and children with Cruise missiles and causing an extreme exodus of Sunnis from Syria with their families, that may wind up in Europe within a month or too over the waters.
The second thing he desperately wants is to raise the price of oil.
How could he or would he do this?
The easiest way would be to create a fight (accidentally on purpose) with a country like Saudi Arabia.
For example, one Saudi pilot might be upset about what Putin is doing to Sunnis in Syria enough to make it his personal vendetta to attack Russian planes or tanks. And this might set off (accidentally on purpose) an excuse for Russia to attack Saudi Arabia.
For Putin, any way he can keep Assad in power and any way he can raise the price of oil, he will.
