I think the answer to this question is: "Yes"
However, for some people being a free thinker also means they don't believe in God. However, I am a Free thinker and I believe in Both God and Buddha. But, I also would say "May the Force Be With You" as in Star Wars and Jedi Knights.
But, I can also see that not believing in God or a higher power will also contribute to more suicides when people don't believe in God both through Jumping out of windows and off of cliffs and also through drug overdoses. So, if you kill yourself because you are a free thinker because you don't believe in God is this a good thing?
I would say "No" this isn't a good thing.
You can have your own point of view but this is mine.
So, my argument would be: "IF people believe in God or a Higher power they will much less likely kill themselves.
Also, I would say that believing in God might help keep more people alive.
However, do I believe people should stay alive no matter how much pain they are in and no matter if they have a terminal diagnosis from a doctor?
I think at this point everyone should be free to make their own decisions.
But this is just my point of view. I am not telling you to have this opinion. This is just mine.
I watched all sorts of people growing up not go to doctors and die, including my father who should have lived to 100 and instead died at 69 because he didn't have his prostate cancer taken care of even after it was diagnosed.
So, I can see how many religions kill people with their belief systems by encouraging them not to go to doctors ever.
So, is it useful to be a free thinker?
I think the answer has to be yes, even if for some people they become Atheists or Agnostics.
But, this is just my opinion.
But once again I'm not an atheist.
I believe in God and Buddha and Jesus.
But, I also believe in Science and the Scientific Method.
In fact, I find running all ideas through the scientific method including religious ones very helpful in making sense of my life and everyone else's.
It's one of the many reasons I'm still alive in my late 60s.
To the best of my ability I write about my experience of the Universe Past, Present and Future
