Arcane: A Tale of All Hallows’ Eve - annual Halloween ballet returns to the Cowell in 2016
Company C Contemporary Ballet will once again offer refuge to the
wayward ghosts who haunt the Bay Area during Autumn’s October days.
The one-hour ballet, suitable for families with children as well
as anyone who loves Halloween, tells the original story of Arcane, the
star that sits at the hip of the harvest moon. Each Halloween, when the
veil between life and death is most thin, she descends to Earth. She
brings with her the “Voice of the Voiceless,” and with this voice
animates all things to mischief and revelry.
The production mines a wide field of traditional, narrative, and theatrical inspirations from the Mexican Day-of-the-Dead holiday, poi ball spinning of the ancient Maori people of New Zealand, and Chinese and Greek mythology. Lots of stage magic and effects bring the story to life and augment the dancing. We’ve added new characters, music, and choreography to enhance this year’s production.
We are greatly inspired by the team of artists we have gathered to work on this extraordinary Halloween ballet. You can look forward to outstanding contemporary dancing to an exciting original score by Mike Krisukas (Zen for Primates) and choreography by Charles Anderson.
