Even though it is still approximately 70 miles away from Mt. Shasta people were worried about a Wind off the ocean blowing their direction. But, for now, regarding the Carr fire it is 30 to 35% contained (which is mostly on the side towards the city of Redding but not as much on the North or West or South west). So, it could still burn North or west or south West because of this if bad winds and heat come. But, right now, they are at least 10 degrees. For example, even though it is only 91 right now it is supposed to be 103 today in Redding but that is still around 10 degrees cooler than last week around this time I believe.
The other thing my friend was talking about is that people in Redding and Mt. Shasta are helping each other and that there is much less apocalyptic talk after the last week and more just people helping people survive these times. He said last night he even was able to see the stars a little and from his window can see that there is snow on Mt. Shasta (barely) because of the smoke during the day time because the smoke isn't as horrendous last night and today so far.
The fire is presently burning between Trinity Lake and Shasta Lake. Actually I did an Obrien to Mt. Shasta Google Maps and that said it the fire is approximately only 40 to 45 miles from Mt. Shasta at this point. Also, where the fire is burning there aren't many roads (even dirt ones) between the fire and Mt. Shasta either. So, it is going to be very hard to fight except for Hot shots on the ground and helicopters and air tankers of various sizes. It's going to be hard (except for 4 wheel drive Fire engines) to get near the fire at all which is going to make fighting it very dangerous indeed as it slowly moves towards the little City of Mt. Shasta and other little towns along Shasta Dam in the future. There are also some settlements near Trinity lake as well. So, saying one side of the fire is in between Trinity Lake and Shasta Lake up past where the dam is might be useful.
However, with Shasta Lake and Trinity lake nearby the fire there it will be easy for helicopters to refill their water tanks because of all the lakes nearby. Often they use the biggest helicopters called "Sky Cranes" for this.
