Lane weakens to a tropical storm, but landslides and flooding are still a threat

HURRICANE Lane has caused devastating flooding to Hawaii as it swirls though the Pacific Ocean just south of the islands - here is the 2am NOAA on the tropical storm.

 said in its latest update: “Tropical Storm Lane moving slowly towards the north-northwest south of Hawaii.
“Lane’s outer rain bands producing severe flooding across parts of the Hawaii Islands.”
As of 2am local time,  was centred about 130 miles (210 km) south of Honolulu and 185 miles (305km) south of Lihue, moving at a sluggish speed of 3mph (6km/h).
Maximum wind speeds have hit 65mph (100km) and are expected to weaken later but NOAA said tropical storms conditions were expected to hit Oahu, Maui County and Big Island today.

Some parts of Big Island have already seen 40 inches of rainfall, swelling riverbanks and flooded streets in the populated town of Hilo on the east coast.
NOAA said Lane could still produce up to 20 inches of rainfall over the weekend “which could lead to additional flash flooding and landslides”.
A warning was also in place for “isolated tornados” this morning across Big Island, Maui County and Oahu.
Lane was downgraded to a tropical storm on Friday after previously churning through the Pacific Ocean at a Category 5  earlier in the week.

Many roads were made impassable as flash floods tore through Maui and Big Island in recent hours, leaving people stranded in their homes and cars.
Emergency workers had been prevented from reaching the people they were trying to rescue in some cases.
A volunteer disaster assist team said on Twitter: “The cops are getting trapped.
“They go into an area to get (people) out, then realize the water's to high to go back the way they came.”

Hawaii Governor David Ige told a press conference on Friday officials still anticipated “lots of rain from Lane in the coming hours”.
The highest rainfall has been in Waiakea, Big Island, with 44.88 inches, according to the latest update from Accuweather.
The weather news site said this is the largest amount of rain to hit Hawaii from a tropical storm since Paul in November 2000 when 38.76 inches fell.
There have been no reports of casualties or injuries at present.

More than 1,000 people are believed to have sought refuge at emergency shelters in recent hours.

When will Lane pass Hawaii by?

With Lane now on a north-westward trajectory, the centre of the tropical storm is on course to pass south of Kauai and Niihau later today before moving away from the US archipelago.
The next NOAA update will be at 4pm BST (5am local time) on Saturday.
