So, when I write it might seem like I personally am afraid of a Technological Singularity. However, I'm not happy about Terminator situations that might occur like the movie. But, generally speaking most technology likely won't need to mass exterminate mankind only some types of military hardware that has been or will be developed around the world.
And if you have an Electromagnetic pulse big enough they all will immediately fry electrically and permanently be shut down (unless they are specifically wired to be impervious to electromagnetic pulses). And a lot of military hardware is built to withstand the EMP from nuclear weapons for example, even though your home versions of cars and trucks would no longer be drivable after a big EMP.
Unless you replace all the wiring and computer chips in your car or truck. All your smartphones and ipads and computers would fry if they were above 10 feet underground too and be inoperable.
The problem is that if we had even one day of a Carrington like event most smartphones and computers would no longer work from a solar flare of that size and most passenger planes would fall out of the sky because the electronics that relay yoke and pedal movements to the ailerons and tail would no longer be functional.
Note: This got me thinking some. I realized if Boeing and other passenger plane manufacturers wired for EMPs while building passenger planes it would greatly lessen their eventual liability when thousands of passenger planes suddenly fall out of the sky sometime in the next 500 to 1000 years from another Carrington event. Because this is not an IF it is only a When?
