I think in the end that this is the point. Mainland China has NEVER known human rights or freedom ever in 6000 years. The Chinese people have ALWAYS been slaves and nothing else during that time. But, Hong Kong has had well over 100 years of actual freedom and human rights under the British so they just aren't going to give up those human rights. So, burning down Hong Kong is within the sight of protestors because of this. Personally, I see this as neither good or bad but what happens when people have lived with actual human rights for this long. They are willing to die rather than to give them up.
This is just the reality of life here on earth.
