Here's How Many Planes Are in the Sky Right Now
Depending on the time of day or time of year, there could be anywhere from 8,000 to 20,000 planes mid-flight at any given moment, according to Flightradar24, which keeps track of flights in real time.

How Many Planes Are in the Sky Right Now | Reader's Digest

So, I figure about 1/2 of the planes in the sky would fall out of the sky because of electrical failure of all control surfaces if a Carrington event happened now.

Could this be prevented?
Possibly, a Carrington event is similar in effect to an EMP caused by a nuclear explosion. So, I'm thinking if the same technology that the U.S. military uses to be able to allow jets and planes and army trucks to still operate after a nuclear EMP was used on passenger planes then they wouldn't need to fall out of the sky during the next Carrington event which is not an IF But ONLY a WHEN.

Because, imagine an average of 100 people dying per plane in the 10,000 or more passenger planes that would crash within about 5 minutes of a Carrington event from a loss of control of control surfaces on the plane.

Note: IN small planes often the control surfaces are controlled by wires on pulleys to control surfaces so they might be okay when their engines stopped and they might glide and land if the pilot knows how to fly a glider in addition to a powered plane. You do this by dropping the nose enough to keep enough moving air under your wings so you don't stall the wings.

However, in passenger planes it is too far from the control surfaces to the yoke and pedals to do this. So, there are electrical assists to these control surfaces from the yoke and pedals. Because of this, passenger planes on autopilot or being manually flown would all fall out of the sky with no controls working at all killing everyone on board.
