The Blue countries are part of the Allied Alliances carried over from World War II to some degree led by the United States which helped win World War II.
The Red are the Communist alliances that began with (during World War II) Stalin in Russia and Mao Tse Tung in China)
The Green are the unaligned nations who were mostly 3rd world nations at that time that didn't want to be nuked by either side by the Allies or the Communists. They formed the unaligned group mostly just so they couldn't or wouldn't get nuked along with the Red or Blue nations if it came to a nuclear war.
It was a way to stay out of the fight so they might survive a world nuclear war.
