One of the problems is pilots and stewards have been being paid less and less over the years. So, it is not the well paying job it used to be for most pilots and stewards worldwide.
However, now companies likely will have to pay much more for pilots and stewards in order to get good employees at this point worldwide.
Younger pilots and stewards are attracted to the "Traveling" life style but if people aren't paid enough they have to share apartments around the world with other pilots or stewards and so affording your own place or enough money to get married and raise a family might be problematic for many.
So, as these careers change in various ways it also will cause changes in other ways too over time.
So, the combination of training more pilots and stewards and stewardesses might help solve this problem nationwide and worldwide because I suspect it is a worldwide problem not just a U.S. one.
The other problem that has caused many pilots and stewards and stewardesses retire or leave the profession is people freaking out and fighting on board planes for various reasons. Stewardesses and pilots are not paid enough to be police personnel aboard planes. Only Sky or Air Marshalls are actually trained for this kind of an assignment in basic crowd control and to arrest people in handcuffs onboard to subdue them until police of various cities put them in jail when they land.
