My Daughter and I watched "Mars Attacks(1996)" with Jack Nicholson and many big stars like Annette Bening and Michael J Fox and Sarah Jessica Parker and many many others including Natalie Portman which was a surprise when I re-watched this too.
However, my daughter was not raised in the 1950s like me and didn't get all the tongue in check humor and thought that the movie missed it's mark simply because her generation might not get it the way we did back then.
For me, watching this movie it is a homage to all the UFO people killed by their governments (likely millions now) around the world because they dared to speak about their real life experiences. So, I find the humor extremely cathartic and cleansing whereas someone born in 1996 might not get it at all.
