A Rhode Island child has died from an infection complicated by Enterovirus D68, health officials said on Wednesday. The patient’s name has not been released.
The RI Department of Health said in a press release that the child “died last week as a result of Staphylococcus aureus sepsis associated with enteroviral infection (EV-D68). Infection by both Staphylococcus aureus sepsis and EV-D68 is a very rare combination that can cause very severe illness in children and adults.” Staphylococcus aureus sepsis is commonly known as Staph.
The death was confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Wednesday— one week after state health officials confirmed that an 8-year-old Massachusetts girl had been diagnosed with the first case of Enterovirus D68.
Enterovirus is a fairly common respiratory virus, but the D68 strain has been causing severe respiratory problems in children, such as trouble breathing. The Boston Globereports that Boston Children’s Hospital is investigating a possible link between Enterovirus D68 and paralysis in children with respiratory viruses.
