Each person has to ask themselves this question.
For me, personally I know (being born in 1948) that not believing in God would mean I would have died at age 2 or 3 or somewhere between ages 10 and 14.
Why is this?
Because I had whooping cough at age 2 and I had blunt trauma childhood epilepsy between ages 10 to 15 when my cranium grew up enough so the pressure was relieved from my brain so I stopped having seizures.
When I was 2 my grandmother was singing "Hark the Herald Angels Sing" and literally brought down Archangel Michael and his band of angels with this singing as I lay on her lap coughing. This prevented me from dying and I then got well.
At 9 I fell 8 feet onto my head while rock climbing with my Dad onto the back of my head. However, my seizures didn't start right away they started about a year later at night. I expected to die during this time from 10 to 15. Not much was known about this kind of thing and my father forbade me to take phenobarbitol which was the only drug available for me then prescribed by doctors. So, all I had was mind over matter.
But, should you believe in God?
I think it's up to you.
However, I know for myself if I didn't believe in God I would have died by 2 or 3 or from 10 to 15 years of age.
There was no other way then to survive the terror of my experience of being murdered every time I had a seizure and passing out and waking up sometimes in a pool of blood surrounding my head on the floor while my Dad said something like "You've got to get some religion under your belt son or you are going to die!"
I knew he was right at 14 and started to go to church 4 times a week for the next year.
Believing in God can keep you alive. Sometimes it's all you have in life to keep you going.
Otherwise, you are just dead.
But, everyone has to come to this on their own. But I find without God, "Life's a Bitch and then you DIE!"
For me, this is the problem of not believing in God!
So, I prefer to believe in God because I would have been dead a hundred times without God already.
So, for me, it is in my enlightened self interest to believe in God so I can live a long time.
(I've already made it to my late 60s and watched most of my friends and relatives die already.)
So, believing in God is why I'm still alive. (And also a wife that makes sure I have medical insurance, Medicare, and I get to the doctor at the first sign of trouble in my life now).
