North to Shasta

We got away from the SF Bay area around 11:30 today and headed north. Though the temperatures inland were probably mostly around 86 to 97 where we live on the ocean it didn't get above about 60 or 65 degrees the last couple of days and no sun. So, we were happy to get on the road and head north. There were no problems until there was a 1610 AM radio notification on signs at about Red Bluff on Interstate 5. So, depending upon the traffic loads starting about Pollock Flat after Shasta Dam and Lake on Interstate 5 you might spend an hour or more going around 2 miles an hour and getting on a single lane north for several miles. Like I said it depends upon how much traffic you are in how long it will take to do this. For example, if you went through here at night likely no problem the later it is. If there is bad traffic then 1 to 3 or more hours it might take to do this depending entirely on traffic load throughout this weekend. So, we left at 11:30 and arrived 7 1/2 hours later at around 7 pm which is a little longer than it normally takes. However, I only stopped once around Willows to get gas and that's all too which means it shouldn't have taken this long. So, like I said during the day it is 1 to 3 hours longer depending upon traffic during the day this holiday until likely at least Monday sometime.

I called friends to see if I should go around through Burney but I knew that this would definitely add 3 hours or more to our journey. After looking at Caltrans it didn't say anything about the problem when I plugged "5 " into the grid space it came back with nothing about the place north of Pollock Flat so I realized that it likely would be better to try Interstate 5 since the problem wasn't listed at Caltrans. I was right it only was about 1 hour longer instead of 3 or 4 if I went around to Burney to avoid the Pollock Flat place and the 2 miles per hour travel forward for up to an hour.
