I was surprised because it was a little hard to get over the coral fields safely deep enough into the water not to get injured by the larger waves Yesterday. Even today it is quite windy which is something that usually creates bigger waves all by itself. A friend of mine got a slight concussion from body surfing the bigger waves. I used a boogie board which usually (but not always) prevents your head being slammed into the sand and getting a concussion by a strange breaking wave. So, we were lucky we were able to convince him to even take an Advil which would reduce the swelling in his neck from his injuries and help to keep him alive and reduce his pain overnight. He must be doing better because he is out snorkeling today right now.
However, if you are using a boogie board while surfing a wave you might get hit in the face by your boogie board if you get thrown off the top of a wave 3 to 5 feet onto your face but the foam of a boogie board is forgiving and the sand is not if you hit it hard enough because even if you hit your face on the boogie board it is usually having water under it which cushions this blow a lot because the boogie board floats so high in the water.
But, yes. I saw Humahumanukanukaapuaa swimming by and bugle fish and about 10 or 12 other species of fish. I have seen hundreds of fish in past years swimming in schools but this time I saw separate species mostly and a few of each species while snorkeling and when I went in to the shore from the ocean I was able to coast over the coral to the shore on a wave without injuring myself which made me very happy yesterday.
This is what a Humahumanukanukaapuaa fish looks like:
