- Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn met in 1966 but didn't begin dating until 1983 after their previous marriages had ended.
- In 1983, they welcomed their first son together, Wyatt Russell, and raised their children from previous marriages together: Russell's son Boston and Goldie's children actress Kate Hudson and Oliver Hudson.
- The actors have been together for nearly four decades, yet they have no intention of marrying each other.
- They most recently starred alongside each other in Netflix's The Christmas Chronicles: Part Two, which debuted in November 2020.
1966: Meeting on Set
Like most Hollywood relationships, Goldie and Kurt met on set of The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band in 1966—although they wouldn't become romantically involved for another 17 years. With Goldie 21 at the time and Kurt, 16, the actress later recalled to BBC Radio 4, "I thought he was adorable, but he was much too young. Then, years later we met up again, and I remembered that I liked him very much when I first met him. We both said we would never go out with another actor so it just shows you never can tell."
1983: The Pick-Up Line That Started It All
Their paths eventually crossed again in 1983 when they were both cast in the film Swing Shift and Kurt used a corny pick-up line to win her over. He later told Conan O'Brien of the moment, "I was severely hungover and I didn't know Goldie at all outside of having worked with her those many years before. I just didn't have in my mind what I was going to say, and she had a great body. So the first thing that came out was, 'Man, you've got a great figure.' It came out quickly and it could've gone wrong, and she said, 'Why thank you.'"
1983: A Date With the Police
However, the actor's flirting worked and the couple eventually went on their first date one night after work. Kurt brought Goldie to The Playboy Club and the two supposedly talked for hours, prompting the pair to continue the light at Goldie's recently purchased home. But since the house was under renovation, the actress still didn't have a key so the couple had to get creative. Kurt to People, “We eventually found our way upstairs, looking around at imaginary furniture. We were in the imaginary bedroom when the police walked in because we had to break into the place to get in. That was our first date."
July 10, 1986: A Blended Family
After three years of dating, Kurt and Goldie welcomed their first and only child together, Wyatt Russell. But, their son's birth wasn't the first time the Hollywood stars became parents. Goldie, who was first married to Gus Trikonis from 1969 to 1976 and Bill Hudson from 1976 to 1982, was already mother to daughter Kate Hudson and son Olivier Hudson, whom she had with her second husband. Kurt also had a son, Boston Russell, with ex-wife Season Hubley, whom he was married to from 1979–1983.
1987: Co-Stars, Again
In 1987, the couple starred alongside side each other for the third time in the comedy Overboard. Years later, Goldie and Kurt wound up watching the movie again and it reminded the actress of why she fell in love. "You know how sometimes you forget why you fell in love? I remembered everything, and why I fell in love. It was really something to be able to watch that," she told James Corden.
March 29, 1989: Oscar Presenters
Goldie and Kurt teamed up to present the Oscar for Best Director at the 61st Academy Awards. But before they announced Barry Levinson as the winner for his film Rain Man, the couple put on a funny sketch regarding their relationship status. "We fit in completely to the theme of the show," said Goldie. "Because we're costars, we're compadres, we're companions and we're a couple!" Kurt responded with, "There's only one thing we're not: Married," which prompted a laugh from the crowd.
September 27, 2016: Their Secret to Long-Lasting Love
According to Goldie, the secret to her long-time relationship with Kurt (at this point they'd been together for 33 years!) was all thanks to the fact that they didn't get married. "I would be long divorced if I'd been married," she revealed on Loose Women. "If you need to feel bound to someone it's important to be married. I chose to stay, Kurt chose to stay and we liked the choice. What is marriage going to do?"
May 4, 2017: Hollywood Walk of Fame
In 2017, the long-time couple each received stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame during a dual ceremony. "It turned out to be a love fest," Goldie said, per People. "The last thing he said was, 'I’ll always cherish you.' I didn’t expect him to say those things. I had no idea he was going to be so beautiful."
November 17, 2018: Family Always Comes First
While promoting his upcoming film, The Christmas Chronicles, in 2018, Kurt explained to the Daily Mail that that to Goldie and him, family always trumps business. "We were very aware of what would happen had we both pursued our careers full-on. I very rarely worked when I knew Goldie was going to be working. And vice-versa. Which meant we could be together. I never thought that what the business could provide would ever take precedence over us. Money is great, but you’ve got to say no. You really do." He continued, "There was a movie I was going to be paid a lot of money for. I’d rather not say what it was, but it came when I’d just done two pictures in a row and Goldie was about to go to work, so I had to turn it down."
November 22, 2018: The Christmas Chronicles
It had been decades since the Hollywood stars appeared on the silver screen together but all of that changed in 2018 when Goldie made a cameo as Mrs. Claus in Netflix's The Christmas Chronicles.
November 18, 2020: The Christmas Chronicles: Part 2
Two years later, the couple reprised their roles as Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus in The Christmas Chronicles: Part Two. This time, however, Goldie's role was much more than a cameo and she even credited Kurt with designing the more-developed character.
December 9, 2020: No Need to Wed
Now together for 37 years (and counting!), Kurt and Goldie again revealed that they have no intention of marrying. "You’ve just got to want to be together. I don’t think there’s any way other than do it," the actress told People. "It’s okay. It’s not about the marriage. It’s about the people and the relationship, and the will to stay together. And that’s a big one because if you want it, you can have it. You’ve got to give things up, but the joy and the excitement of being together and touching the toes of somebody at night is really a nice feeling."
Kurt added, "For people like us, the marriage certificate wasn’t going to create anything that otherwise we wouldn’t have."
