What is a Pineapple express?
It is a weather event for California and the west coast that starts about where Hawaii is and comes and brings a whole lot of rain.
What is an Atmospheric River?
An Atmospheric River (at Least in California) is a flooding Pineapple Express which sometimes does a lot of damage like this last one has to Southern California.
HOWEVER:
Since Southern California has recently (the last few years) been experiencing an extreme drought it is often really really really helpful to most areas where people can survive these things because it will fill up reservoirs and make the area green and less susceptible to fires.
However, where there have been fires more recently (within a few years) this can really make an extreme mess "LIke in Pacific Palisades" and where the Eaton Fire was to the point where the whole place becomes a rocky sandy mess of mud and rocks moving and settled ashes moving towards the ocean in multiple uncontrollable ways.
So, Atmospheric Rivers usually do much more good than they do harm to places like Southern California especially in areas where people can survive them without all their property being ruined by Mud and rocks and debris and moving ashes from burned areas from the extreme amount of water that comes down within a few days.
15 inches of rain within 3 days is not unusual for California at all. However, can the area you are in survive this much rain or are some people going to die (like the 25 or so people who died in Montecito a few years ago in a very rich area where many actors and famous people live).
