When I grew up it was easy to replace a screen into a door unless the door was busted. You remove the door by lifting it vertically usually until the bottom slides out. then you take the Screen door and place it on a table or two saw horses or something stable and start taking out the little rubber stripping that holds in the screen (Pretty East)
But then we had French sliding doors put on 5 rear entrances to out outdoor deck where my Hot Tub lives.
So then, one day one of my grandsons likely 8 years old then didn't see the screen door closed and ran right though the screen to get to the hot tub where other family members already were to take a swim or soak in the hot tub.
So, this was the end of this screen for this door.
So, then I go over to replace the screen in the door and what do I find?
You cannot lift this one out vertically at all the way this is built. And I'm basically too old to replace the screen in place at this point effectively. So, I'm still sitting here looking at the screen being held by Gray Tape and wondering the best course of action still today.
However, likely eventually I have a house cleaner who has his own janitorial business who also helped me repair my deck and hot tub when a big tree fell down upon it the Christmas before last at 6 am in the morning. So, eventually we will likely replace this screen. However, our other house in Santa Barbara has cost us thousands of dollars to fix plumbing and other cement types of issues like a 6 foot deep cement wall built underground to keep the house from eventually sliding off it's terrace on the side of a hill.
Also, we got ten inches of rain in Santa Barbara in a few hours in either November or December of 2025 and this put 4 foot deep ruts in the bank sloping down from our house there too. So, a lot of work there and likely almost no house repair stuff in the SF Bay area as a result. Besides our Santa Barbara house was built around 1950 and her mother bought it in 1978 or so so it needs much more work because our house on the coast in the SF Bay area is much newer.
So, if we ever sold this house in the Bay area on the coast we would still keep her mother's house because it means a lot to my wife and also it has a private beach there nearby which is nice too. So, it's a place you can almost always get warm there in Santa Barbara because it has one of the best year around climates on earth!
Note: When I actually talked to my ex-Army Ranger that owns his own janitorial business about fixiing my screen door with Gray Duct Tape he showed me how screen doors actually come out now. It ISN"T the way they did from the 1950s on. At some point they now don't lift out at all by lifting the whole door.
NOW YOU HAVE TO GO TO THE BOTTOM AND LIFT UP ON THE LITTLE WHEELS TO DISLODGE THE DOOR FROM THE FRAME TO FIX THE SCREEN. ALSO, OUR OTHER HOUSE CLEANER A LADY SAYS YOU CAN TAKE THE DOOR TO ACE HARDWARE AND THEY WILL FIX IT FOR YOU. ALSO, THE EX-ARMY RANGER SAYS YOU CAN BUY A SCREEN FIX KIT FOR AROUND 25 DOLLARS OR SON (MAYBE MORE) AND DO IT YOURSELF. SO, WE ASKED HIM TO FIX THE SCREEN DOOR WHILE WE ARE IN MT. SHASTA.
SO, IF YOUR CHILD OR GRANDCHILD OR SOMEONE DRUNK RAN THROUGH YOUR SCREEN SLIDING DOOR OR OTHER SCREEN DOOR LIKE A LARGE DOG OR SOMETHING RAN THROUGH MY EX-ARMY RANGER'S SCREEN DOOR (HIS NEW FULL SIZE DOG) RECENTLY YOU NOW KNOW HOW TO FIX IT SEVERAL WAYS.
I guess I was still back before they changed screen sliding doors to be fixed like this.
So, you learn something new every day.
I think one of the strangest things for me to deal with is that cars don't have points for the firing of cylinders because it's all done with a computer chip now. So, as things change often you aren't aware of these changes like I wasn't aware of how much screen doors have changed.
Good luck with your screen doors if they get torn out!
