He had been in a wheelchair because of withdrawal from prescription Steroids. However, even with a prescription for something like Myasthenia Gravis, an Autoimmune disease too much steroids cause problems. So, the hospital had been detoxing him off of steroids entirely which is actually good at this point because though this put him in a wheelchair for a week because his muscles got too weak being off this medicine. However, also not taking steroids he is no longer pooping his pants without warning which can be caused by Prednisone too. So, even though it can be prescribed to help some illnesses by doctors it is actually a very dangerous medicine unless used properly.
So, since the doctors got him off prednisone entirely he is doing much better and actually got up at 6:30am and walked several miles to a Starbucks and my wife just went to pick him up from there. So, at least he is out of the wheelchair now and getting his strength and equilibrium back.
Here are some of the side effects of prednisone:
- Mental/Mood Changes: Anxiety, irritability, confusion, or feelings of unquenchable energy.
- Metabolic: Elevated blood sugar levels (a major concern for individuals with diabetes).
- Bone Health: Thinning bones (osteoporosis) and an increased risk of fractures.
- Immune System: A suppressed immune system, making you more susceptible to infections and slowing wound healing.
- Skin & Muscles: Thin, fragile skin, easy bruising, and muscle weakness.
- Eyes: Increased risk of developing cataracts or glaucoma.
- Hormonal: Changes in fat distribution (such as a "moon face" or a fatty hump between the shoulders) and suppression of natural adrenal gland function.
- Do not stop abruptly: Suddenly discontinuing prednisone can trigger withdrawal symptoms (e.g., severe fatigue, body aches) or an adrenal crisis. Always follow a doctor's schedule to taper off the medication slowly.
- When to seek immediate medical attention: Contact your doctor or seek urgent care if you experience severe symptoms such as high fever, signs of infection, chest pain, shortness of breath, black or bloody stools, or sudden mental confusion.
