UN chief to visit flood-hit Pakistan as cholera concerns loom

"The threat from cholera in the flood-affected communities remains high. In order to avoid excess mortality, it is important that all acute watery diarrhea cases with severe dehydration have easy and rapid access to standardized treatment covering waterborne diseases, including cholera."
Giuliano said at least 36,000 cases of acute watery diarrhea have been reported.
The floods have disrupted the lives of about 20 million people, the prime minister said.
One-fifth of Pakistan -- which is about the size of Florida -- has been flooded in relentless monsoon rains, according to the United Nations.end quote.

Nearly 1,400 people have died and 875,000 homes have either washed away or are damaged, according to Pakistan's Disaster Authority.end quote.
If the lives of 20 million people in an area the size of Florida have been affected and 875,000 homes have been damaged or destroyed the potential for injury or continued loss of life from exposure, bad water, no food, starvation, or Cholera is extreme in a way seldom seen on earth. The other problem is that the monsoon season of heavy rains will continue into September. Note: as of Monday August 16th 1/5 of Pakistan is covered with water.
