Though this sounds really good on the surface of things and might eventually reduce accidents and fatalities by about 70% in the U.S. and this appears to be coming now in the U.S. possibly even before Obama leaves office a few years from now here are some things to think about:
Though a computer might see one problem coming it might not see 10 problems coming. So, as it is handling one problem in a severe multi-pronged emergency a driver with good vision and really good reflexes and driving skills might save himself or herself and the computerized system could cause a fatality simply because (one couldn't disengage it from doing what it is doing fast enough to save one's own life). So, it is important to know that if there is only one factor then this might save many lives but if there are multiple factors that a driver is aware of, a cool headed human driver who is aware of all the variables might actually be able to save himself or herself, but not if the computer kicked in to deal with only one of multiple variables happening at once.
So, for myself, I would rather not have this computerized braking system accidentally cause my death or the deaths of people I love when multiple variables occur simultaneously.
Let me give you an example:
When I was about 20 years old and driving down the freeways of Los Angeles about 70 mph in the flow of traffic a really bad accident occurred about 3 cars in front of me. But because of the speed everyone was traveling the 3 cars in front of me as well as my car and the 4 cars behind me likely were going to get killed.
If a computer was involved braking then I would have died at 20 like many people around me did. However, because I was driving a brand new 1968 Camaro with excellent cornering abilities and because I was young and with very good reflexes like a race car driver I lived. The way I did this was not to put on my brakes at first but just simply to steer my car into the emergency lane (screech screech) left in right straighten out first and then braking to a stop. Every car in front of me and behind me was totaled because they just couldn't execute this kind of maneuver because they didn't have a car like mine or my abilities as a young and very coordinated driver. So, I didn't receive a scratch and neither did my car.
However, let's replay that with automatic computer braking. Because of how drastic this situation was likely both my car and I wouldn't be around here today. This is the problem even though 70% of the time people might live. In the situation I'm illustrating it wouldn't have worked out that way.
To the best of my ability I write about my experience of the Universe Past, Present and Future
