I was thinking why lead got everyone's attention and then realized it is because of the lead poisoning of children in Flint Michigan. And it is true that lead in gasoline also harmed children's development in large cities especially in urban areas where there was an extreme amount of traffic near traffic lights where children either went to school or played from the 1920s to as late as the 1990s in some states. This had a very bad effect especially on African American, Hispanic American and very poor white children who lived in these areas as well from the 1920s to the 1990s.
However, these children did not "Eat" lead they breathed lead so the effects of eating lead by drinking water contaminated by lead would be much worse. But, brain damage occurred even breathing leaded gasoline in urban areas throughout the U.S. especially in well traveled ghettos with major thoroughfares with stop lights there from the 1920s to the 1990s some places in the U.S.
California was the first state I believe to outlaw lead in our gasoline which was one of the reasons our gasoline was always more expensive than other states in the 1970s. GM, Ford and Chrysler had to change engines immediately for California which is where the most cars are sold in the U.S. to be able to sell cars here at all. Because the older engines could not run properly without lead in the gasoline. So, whole new ways in regard to valve seats in engines were tried for California. This also allowed other states to outlaw leaded gas in their states too.
So, now if you have a car with an original engine made before 1970 or so you have to get a little plastic bottle of lead additive in order to not destroy the older type of engine while running it.
