From the SF Bay area this is tricky even during the week because of traffic cycles, people working on the road and sometimes accidents along the way or just traffic jams. But, with Google maps with the Traffic(red, orange and Green) stuff plugged in where GReen means okay, Red means basically the traffic is stopped at this location or Orange which means the traffic is markedly slowed down one can more easily navigate through the traffic problems of the Los Angeles area on the way to the San Diego Area.
What I discovered this time I learned from my God Daughter when she visited us and then returned to her home in the San Diego area. She left about 7 am in the morning. This allowed her to get home around 1 to 3 pm to San Diego before the Traffic got too bad.
We did a similar thing. The GPS routed us down 101 and then over 46 to Interstate 5 over the grape vine to 210 then across the Los Angeles area to Interstate 15 south. This turned out to be a really great route because you by pass all the more well traveled routes along the ocean where people go for scenery but then get caught in traffic jams. so we screamed through Los Angeles County past orange county to San Bernadino and Riverside counties and finally down San Diego County on Interstate 15.
Of course this can change with road work or accidents or traffic at any point in time but basically we found this to be a very good route to get to San Diego County for us today. If we only got enough sleep the night before it would have been perfect but 4 or 5 hour sleep to pull all this off wasn't enough for us. But, we were definitely smiling about not hitting traffic and doubling the time of our journey.
I have more than once hit traffic and spent 5 to 7 hours stuck with not much I could do trying to just get across Los Angeles and to places like Palm Springs on a Friday night for example. Don't do that.
Normally, if you miss the traffic it might be only a 2 hour drive to Palm Springs from many points in Los Angeles County.
So, we were pretty happy with our strategy today.
