I think a good way to talk about this would be to say, "If you were hungry and didn't have any food or discovered you were out of food and didn't have money to buy food you would then experience the "GRIEF" of being hungry.
So, I think this is a good place to start. And likely up to 1/3 to 1/4 of the population of earth likely deals with a little of this every day not by choice.
This might be a good place to start with grief.
Grief is not a bad thing. It is life telling you that something is wrong that might interfere with your survival ongoing. You might not like grief but it is sort of like getting hungry. If you didn't get hungry you might not ever eat again and then you would die. It's like this.
So, grief is telling you something is wrong in your life.
So, imagine if you got hungry you tried not to think about being hungry and ignored your hunger until you died.
Grief is something like this too. So, if you ignore your grief you might die in the process of living in denial of your grief.
So, understanding that grief is like hunger and that if you want to continue living in a body you need to take your grief seriously so you can go on living.
A friend of mine, for example, was in denial of her grief in the late 1980s. She told me she went to heaven with her father when he died and that everything was okay. But, she never cried. I was very scared for her because she never cried or grieved properly. Then within a month or two she shaved her head and started walking around in towels and burned her clothes. She's okay today but remember this was the late 1980s or so when this happened. So, don't deny your grief anymore than you should deny your hunger that you need food and water to live to survive.
If you want to have healthy grief don't deny it. Realize it is your friend and it is helping you stay alive now. No matter what happened to you your grief is trying to help you stay alive and be healthy and that's all it is.
