This is a Robert Heinlein quote attributed to one of his Methusela characters--Lazurus Long.
In his book, "Time Enough for Love" Lazurus long says this quote about both History and about religion.
And it is my own personal experience that this is a useful quote.
Because History in the end is only "His Story". If they wanted History to be more than that they would have called it "The Truth".
And the same with religion being a version maybe of history. "It's His Story" once again.
If religion were the truth they woudn't call it religion they would also call it "The Truth".
Therefore it is not wise to look for truth in either history or religion if you are wise but rather look for it in philosophy which is where all the sciences originally sprang from which likely (at least physically speaking) is closer to something resembling the truth.
IF Truth is not found in Religion or History why should one study either?
Answer:
Because History and religion is the basis of culture and without culture there wouldn't have been enough peace to find out truth from philosophy and all the sciences because everyone would have killed themselves or each other and no one at all would have been left alive on earth.
To the best of my ability I write about my experience of the Universe Past, Present and Future
