"in the past, present and future".
This is actually the basis not only of enlightenment but of all useful civilization in the first place.
So, by developing enlightenment you also become what is best about civilization itself throughout the known and unknown universe.
How does one develop compassion towards all life in the universe.
The Tibetan Lamas who taught me in the 1980s said that perceiving all living things as having once been your mother in a previous lifetime is the key to enlightenment's nectar.
Enlightenment's nectar is not only the nectar of the God's it is also the nectar of the Buddha's enlightenment which is a path of Lam Rim or the "Middle Path".
So, it all depends upon what path of enlightenment you are on.
But, the essence of them all is compassion towards all beings in the past, present and future.
Developing compassion for all beings like they are your children (and /or mother's of other lifetimes) puts you in the frame of mind of a potential Buddha by taking the path of enlightenment as a King or a Queen to lead all with you into enlightenment in the past, present and future.
To the best of my ability I write about my experience of the Universe Past, Present and Future
